AI SQL Tuner Studio 1.0.26 — Now with GPT-5.4 Support

We’re excited to release AI SQL Tuner Studio 1.0.26, bringing support for OpenAI’s latest GPT-5.4 model alongside a meaningful quality-of-life improvement for anyone tuning complex, long-running queries.

GPT-5.4 Is Here

The headline for this release is GPT-5.4. AI SQL Tuner Studio will use OpenAI’s latest model by default and immediately benefit from dramatically stronger reasoning, SQL comprehension, and handling of complicated execution plans.

GPT-5.4 is a significant step forward from GPT-5.3 Codex, and not just an incremental one. Where GPT-5.3 Codex was a specialist coding model, GPT-5.4 absorbs those coding capabilities into a full general-purpose reasoning model — meaning you get the same frontier-level code and query understanding, plus much stronger reasoning across the broader context of your workload. Key improvements include:

  • 1 million token context window — GPT-5.4 supports up to 1 million tokens of context, a dramatic increase over GPT-5.3 Codex. For SQL tuning, this means you can feed in larger execution plans, more Query Store history, and richer schema context without hitting a ceiling.
  • Stronger reasoning — GPT-5.4 matches or exceeds industry professionals on 83% of knowledge-work tasks benchmarked, a dimension GPT-5.3 Codex wasn’t designed to compete on. For complex multi-table query rewrites and index recommendations, this shows.
  • Token efficiency — Despite being a more powerful model, GPT-5.4 uses roughly 47% fewer output tokens per task compared to its predecessors, which translates directly to faster responses and lower API costs per tuning run.

Choose Your Reasoning Mode

AI SQL Tuner Studio lets you control how deeply the AI reasons through your query — balancing speed against thoroughness depending on what the situation calls for. There are three modes to choose from:

Low is best for queries where you want a fast answer and the problem is relatively straightforward. A typical tuning run at low reasoning completes in around 2–4 minutes. The model spends fewer internal “thinking” tokens before responding, so it’s quicker and cheaper — a good starting point for simpler queries or when you’re iterating rapidly.

Medium (the default) strikes a balance between speed and depth. It’s the right choice for most queries: complex enough to need genuine analysis, but not so involved that you need the model to exhaustively explore every angle.

High is for your hardest problems — queries with tangled execution plans, problematic parameter sniffing, or joins across many large tables where a shallow analysis might miss the root cause. At high reasoning, the model generates significantly more internal reasoning before producing its recommendations, and a run can take up to 7 minutes. The tradeoff is worth it when the query matters enough to get right the first time.

OpenAI’s reasoning effort documentation has a thorough explanation of how reasoning tokens work under the hood if you want to dig deeper.

Know When You’re Getting the Full Picture

One of the quieter frustrations with AI-assisted query tuning is not knowing whether the model actually finished its analysis or got cut off mid-response. In this release, AI SQL Tuner Studio now detects truncated AI responses and tells you about it immediately — with a visible warning in the results output and a clear notice in the console. No more wondering if the recommendations you’re looking at are complete. If the model ran out of room, you’ll know, and you can adjust accordingly.

We’ve also significantly raised the output token limit to accommodate large query plans and complex workloads, which means truncation should be far less common in the first place.

Reliability Improvements

This release also includes a round of stability fixes that address a startup crash some users encountered on fresh installs, as well as compatibility improvements that make the installer work reliably across a broader range of Windows configurations.
