AI SQL Tuner Studio: Frequently Asked Questions

Short, direct answers to the questions people ask most often about AI SQL Tuner Studio. If you do not see your question here, email support@aisqltuner.com and we will add it.

What is AI SQL Tuner Studio?

AI SQL Tuner Studio is a Windows desktop application that uses large language models to help database developers and DBAs improve the performance and reliability of SQL Server and Azure SQL workloads. It does more than rewrite SQL. It also checks server health, performs SQL code reviews, reviews and optimizes indexes, helps fix deadlocks, and identifies causes of locking and blocking.

What can AI SQL Tuner Studio do?

AI SQL Tuner Studio supports the following workflows inside one application:

  • Rewrite slow SQL statements for better performance.
  • Check server health and surface configuration issues.
  • Perform AI-assisted SQL code reviews.
  • Review existing indexes and suggest changes.
  • Help diagnose and fix deadlocks.
  • Identify the causes of locking and blocking.

You stay in control of every change. The tool proposes, you decide.

Which databases does AI SQL Tuner Studio work with?

Database support depends on the edition:

  • Free. SQL Server Developer only.
  • Standard. SQL Server Standard Edition, Azure SQL Managed Instance General Purpose, Azure SQL Database, and Fabric SQL Database (in addition to SQL Server Developer).
  • Pro. All SQL Server editions, including SQL Server Enterprise, plus Azure SQL Managed Instance Business Critical, Azure SQL Database, and Fabric SQL Database.
  • Corporate. Same database coverage as Pro, with no limit on the number of database server instances.

Which AI models does AI SQL Tuner Studio support?

Every edition supports two models out of the box:

  • OpenAI GPT-5.4
  • Anthropic Claude Sonnet 4.6

The Corporate edition adds two more Anthropic models on top of those:

  • Anthropic Claude Opus 4.6
  • Anthropic Claude Opus 4.7

You can switch between any of the supported models from inside the application.

What editions are available, and what is the difference?

AI SQL Tuner Studio comes in four editions: Free, Standard, Pro, and Corporate.

  • Free. Works with SQL Server Developer only. Uses GPT-5.4 and Claude Sonnet 4.6, but is limited to Low reasoning effort with the AI SQL Tuner provided models. Bring your own model and you can run Low, Medium, or High reasoning effort.
  • Standard. Adds SQL Server Standard Edition, Azure SQL Managed Instance General Purpose, Azure SQL Database, and Fabric SQL Database. Limited to 2 database server instances. Supports GPT-5.4 and Claude Sonnet 4.6.
  • Pro. Adds all SQL Server editions, including Enterprise, and Azure SQL Managed Instance Business Critical. Limited to 2 database server instances. Supports GPT-5.4 and Claude Sonnet 4.6.
  • Corporate. Same database coverage as Pro with no limit on database server instances. Supports GPT-5.4 and Claude Sonnet 4.6, plus Claude Opus 4.6 and Claude Opus 4.7.

What does AI SQL Tuner Studio cost?

Paid plans start at $125 per year for the Standard Edition annual subscription. The Free Edition has no cost. Pro and Corporate are priced higher and unlock broader database support, more database server instances and, in the case of Corporate, additional AI models.

For current pricing across all four editions, see Compare AI SQL Tuner Studio Editions: 4 Powerful Options.

Is there a Free Edition, and what is included?

Yes. The Free Edition works with SQL Server Developer. It supports GPT-5.4 and Claude Sonnet 4.6 through the AI SQL Tuner provided endpoint, but reasoning effort is fixed at Low. If you bring your own AI endpoint and key, you can run Low, Medium, or High reasoning effort with the Free Edition.

What does reasoning effort mean, and which level should I pick?

Reasoning effort controls how much thinking the AI model does before it returns a recommendation. Low is fast and cheap, useful for quick rewrites and routine reviews. Medium and High let the model spend more time on the problem, which helps with complex SQL, deadlocks, or unusual optimizer behavior. The trade off is response time and token cost.

Why does Claude Opus access matter for SQL tuning?

GPT-5.4 and Claude Sonnet 4.6 handle most everyday tuning, code review, and index work well. The Opus 4.6 and Opus 4.7 models in the Corporate edition help when the SQL is long, the schema is wide, or the locking and blocking pattern is unusual, because the larger model can hold more context and reason through more steps before suggesting a fix.

Do I need my own AI endpoint or API key?

No. You can use the AI endpoint and key that AI SQL Tuner Studio provides, with no separate AI subscription required. If you would rather use your own endpoint and key, follow the steps at Bring Your Own AI Endpoint and Model. Bringing your own endpoint also unlocks Low, Medium, and High reasoning effort on the Free Edition.

Who hosts the AI, and what data is sent?

The AI provider is Microsoft Azure Foundry. AI SQL Tuner Studio does not send any content from your user tables. It sends information from dynamic management views (DMVs) and system tables that the AI needs to suggest code rewrites, index changes, or configuration updates. No data is retained by the AI provider.

How is this different from a traditional SQL tuning tool?

Traditional tuning tools rely on rule sets, execution plan parsers, and index advisors. AI SQL Tuner Studio runs your statement, schema, and DMV signals through a large language model, so the suggestions can include rewrites, alternative join orders, index changes, configuration updates, and explanations in plain English. You still review and test every change before applying it.

Will the AI rewrite my SQL or change my database automatically?

No. AI SQL Tuner Studio gives you suggestions, rewrites, and recommended index or configuration changes as output. You read them, compare them against your current setup, test them in your environment, and apply only the ones you trust. Nothing is pushed to your database without you taking that action yourself.

Can I switch AI models on the same query?

Yes. You can run the same SQL through GPT-5.4, Claude Sonnet 4.6, and (in the Corporate edition) Claude Opus 4.6 or 4.7 to compare suggestions. Different models often phrase the rewrite differently or notice different issues, so a second opinion is one click away.

Is there a free trial or money back guarantee?

Yes to both. AI SQL Tuner Studio comes with a 14-day free trial so you can try it before you buy, and a 30-day money back guarantee after purchase. The Free Edition is also available indefinitely if SQL Server Developer is all you need.

What operating systems are supported?

AI SQL Tuner Studio runs on Windows 11 and on Windows Server 2019 and later.
