Until now, the Free edition only worked with SQL Server Developer Edition. Starting with version 3.0.5, it works with every version and edition of SQL Server, plus Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance and Fabric SQL Database. Tune a server you actually run, including production, without paying first.
What changed? Every edition now comes with a monthly analysis quota, which is what makes it possible to open Free up to every platform.
Six tuning goals, one desktop app
Every goal collects the right diagnostics from your server, sends them to the AI, and returns an HTML report with an executive summary, prioritized findings and T-SQL scripts you can review and run.

Advice you can check
AI SQL Tuner Studio is built to give advice you can verify, not guesses:
- Grounded in your data. Every figure in a report is quoted from what Studio collected, or clearly labelled as an estimate with what it is based on. When data is missing, the report says so.
- Storage sizes on every index change. Know what a recommendation will cost on disk before you run it.
- Ready-to-run scripts. Reports include complete T-SQL, not vague suggestions.

How it works
- Install. On Windows 10 or 11, get it from the Microsoft Store above: it installs and updates automatically. For Windows Server, or to receive a license key by email, use the direct download and check out at $0 with your email address. You’ll get the installer and your free license key.
- Activate. The Microsoft Store version activates the Free edition on its own. With the direct download, open Studio, click License…, and paste your key.
- Connect and run. Connect with a least-privileged SQL login, pick a tuning goal, and click Run Analysis. Your report starts streaming in within seconds.
No agents to install on your server. No log shipping. No changes to your database unless you choose to run a script.
Your data stays under your control
- You see everything before it’s sent. Before each run, Studio shows a run plan listing every collector and the system views it reads. Nothing is sent until you approve it.
- Only metadata leaves your machine. Studio sends diagnostic metadata, such as query text, execution plans, index statistics and configuration, to the AI model hosted on Microsoft Foundry in Azure. Table data and query results are never sent.
- Nothing is kept by default. Each analysis is answered and discarded. You can opt in to share analyses to help improve the advice, and delete anything shared from inside the app.
- Read-only by design. Studio runs with a least-privileged login and never changes your database on its own.

Is AI SQL Tuner Studio Free really free?
Yes. The Free edition costs nothing, requires no credit card, and has no time limit. You get 10 analyses every month across all six tuning goals.
Should I install from the Microsoft Store or download directly?
On Windows 10 or 11, the Microsoft Store version is the simplest: it installs and updates automatically, activates the Free edition without a key, and lets you subscribe to a paid edition inside the app. Use the direct download for Windows Server, for PCs where the Microsoft Store is blocked, or if you want a license key by email. Windows treats the two as separate apps, so install only one.
Can I use the Free edition on production servers?
Yes. Starting with version 3.0.5, the Free edition works with every version and edition of SQL Server, including production, as well as Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance and Fabric SQL Database. Earlier versions were limited to SQL Server Developer Edition.
How many servers can I use with the Free edition?
One SQL Server instance. A server is counted on its first analysis, by the name SQL Server reports for itself, so different databases on the same server, or different names for the same server, count once. Deleting connections or reinstalling does not reset the count; contact support to release a server you no longer use. Pro and Team can be used with up to 2 servers, and Enterprise with any number.
What counts as an analysis?
Each run of a tuning goal counts as one analysis. A run that times out does not count. The app shows how many analyses you’ve used and when your count resets.
What happens when I use all 10 analyses?
Further runs pause until your monthly count resets. If you need more before then, you can upgrade to Pro, Team or Enterprise at any time.
Which AI model does the Free edition use?
GPT-5.6 Luna, hosted on Microsoft Foundry in Azure. It’s the default model in every edition, chosen from our benchmark results. You can run it at Low or Medium reasoning effort; Medium is the default and recommended.
Do I need my own Azure OpenAI subscription?
No. The Free edition uses our hosted AI service, so there’s nothing to set up in Azure. Bringing your own AI endpoint is available on Pro, Team and Enterprise.
Is my data stored in the cloud?
No, not by default. Each analysis is answered and discarded. Studio sends diagnostic metadata to the AI for analysis, never table data or query results, and you see the full run plan before anything is sent.
What permissions does it need on my SQL Server?
